Round One: The Wild West 🤠
The idiots were at it again last week.
For a while, the bar resembled a low-budget Wild West film – minus the horses, but with plenty of shattered glass and testosterone. Two enormous men decided that civilised conversation was overrated and launched into full chaos mode.
Both were spectacularly drunk and spectacularly angry. Chairs flew. Glasses smashed. Miraculously, the mirrors and windows survived the evening. Actually, that was the greatest miracle…
The bouncer earned every cent of his salary. He somehow managed to get one of them outside while keeping the other one trapped indoors, presumably to prevent an actual homicide.
But the truly unsettling part came afterwards.
The idiot locked outside spent more than an hour pacing around on his phone, apparently trying to summon armed reinforcements to “sort us out”. 😐 Thankfully, nobody arrived. No guns appeared. No headlines were written the next morning.
Still, it was dreadful.

Round Two: The Jealous Boyfriend 💔
And then – because apparently the universe enjoys sequels – another ugly scene unfolded last night.
The same woman I have mentioned before, the one who treats the bar like a romantic tasting menu, chose the wrong gentleman to flirt with. She always behaves like this – climbs into almost any man who looks at her and is kissing him properly within 5 minutes. I simply don’t understand her behaviour.
Her boyfriend had briefly left the bar, to give someone a lift home. During his absence, she attached herself to a very large man who had been peacefully minding his own business.
When the boyfriend returned, he discovered matters had become… rather advanced.
Naturally, he reacted badly.
Words were exchanged. An aggressive shove followed. Then the large fellow responded with two hard punches in rapid succession.
Boyfriend hit the floor, bounced back up bravely – if unwisely – and the whole thing descended into chaos – yet again 🍺
The bouncer and several bystanders dragged them outside, where the bigger man proceeded to pulverise the boyfriend. Blood everywhere. One missing tooth. Pride severely damaged.
It was all so unnecessary. So sad. So stupid.
Same story. Different evening. 😒
A Glimmer of Light ✨
And yet, amidst all this nonsense, there are still glimmers of humanity around the place. My cancer patient – who has been fighting so courageously – is improving every day. He looks healthier, happier and more optimistic each time I see him. The other night he was talking excitedly about hiking the Inca Trail in a few months’ time!
The world is loud and angry and exhausting right now – and sometimes, so is the bar. But somewhere in amongst the flying chairs and the phone calls to armed friends, there’s a man who’s been fighting for his life and choosing, every single day, to face the chaos with grace.
That’s not nothing. That’s actually everything.
I guess Laughter is the Best Medicine
So here’s some of my weekly medicine…
- Ever seen a heat wave? …did you wave back? 😜
- What do you call someone who’s had too much to drink?
A cab ! 🤪

It Takes All Sorts 🍸

Working behind a bar gives you a ringside view of human nature. The clientele ranges from utterly delightful to quietly exhausting – often within the same hour. It’s challenging chaos, yes… but never dull. They say it takes all sorts to make a party. After enough shifts, you realise that’s less a charming observation and more a quiet threat.
A Small Study in Stupidity

There are days when running a bar feels like hosting a mildly chaotic dinner party. And then there are stupid nights that remind you humanity is, at heart, a poorly supervised experiment. 😐 Wednesday night was one of those reminders. A young man arrived in a state best described as ambitious intoxication – loud, unstable, and buoyed by the kind of confidence only extreme … [Read more…]
